Your Mother is the cornerstone of your life and she deserves to be celebrated everyday! The best way to do it is to pamper her watching together the touching movie “Fried Green Tomatoes” with a hot serving of fried tomatoes coming right from your heart!
There are movies that make us laugh, movies that make us cry, movies that make us feel like changing our lives and movies that make us think…Fried Green Tomatoes has the great power to give us all this emotions and much more!
Based on a bestseller written by Fannie Flagg and nominated to the Pulitzer prize, the film was a worldwide success because it is able to touch the audiences’ hearts, most of all female audiences. The ingredients of the movie are a very captivating plot and the unforgettable talent of four actresses that will reserve their place in cinema history also thanks to these roles. It is very important to highlight the feminism underling the whole story that is both focused on women protagonists, two of them living in the ’30 and two in the ’90, and wants to put the spotlight on homosexual relationships and friendship within different generations.
And since we are talking about women, their lives, their loves and their way to relate to each other, of course food has a central role in the story. Not only because two of the protagonists used it to support themselves opening the Whistle Stop Cafe, but also because they used it express their deep affection. The writer of the book herself decided to share some of the recipes she mentions in the book and, in fact, she gives us three versions of Fried Green Tomatoes. I tried the one with Milk Gravy.
Let me know what your Mother thinks about it!
Title: Mother’s Day Fried Green Tomatoes
Director: Fannie Flagg
Cast of ingredients 🙂
For the tomatoes: 4 green tomatoes, 2 eggs, 1/2cup of all purpose flour, 1/2cup of corn flour, spices (red pepper flakes, pepper, dried basil), oil.
For the Milk Gravy: bacon or sausages dripping, flour, milk or creme fraiche, salt and pepper.
INT. KITCHEN — COUNTER
Slice the tomatoes 1/2 inch thin, sprinkle them with salt and put them aside for 30 min to loose water. In the meantime mix the flours in a bowl and in another bowl mix the eggs with your favorite spices.
INT. KITCHEN — STOVE
When you cook bacon or sausages you’ll find in the pan the dripping: well US Southern ladies found a way not to wast it and make milk gravy. Add two spoons of flour, mix and pour slowly either milk or creme fraiche till the sauce is ready. Add salt and pepper to taste and fry the tomatoes.
